HADAF Foundation for Relief and Development (HADAF) is a legally registered, independent, non-governmental, and non-profit organization focused on Northeastern and Puntland regions in Somalia.
The foundation’s origin dates back to 2018, when it was initially established in Badhan City, Sanaag Region, as a specialized Research, Forum for Policy Discussion and Development Center. Founded by a committed group of Somali intellectuals and professionals, the center’s primary objective was to facilitate evidence-based dialogue and data-driven research on regional challenges.
Responding to the critical and growing demand for localized operational interventions on the ground, the institution’s mandate successfully evolved into the HADAF Foundation for Relief and Development. This strategic transformation was a direct response to systemic climate shocks (recurrent droughts and floods), protracted humanitarian challenges, and deep-rooted socioeconomic disparities affecting northeastern regions in Somalia.
The ‘Isku-Tashiga’ (Collective Self-Reliance) Paradigm At the core of HADAF’s philosophy is the institutionalization of ‘Isku-tashiga’ (Collective Self-Reliance). By cultivating this paradigm, we empower vulnerable communities—including IDPs, women, and youth—to transition decisively from humanitarian dependency to self-sustaining resilience. We leverage indigenous resources and local knowledge to secure long-term stability in complete alignment with the Somalia National Development Plan (NDP9) and the National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029). Technical Scope: Drilling and equipping of 4 shallow/community wells equipped with modern solar-powered pumping systems, integrated high-capacity storage tanks, distribution networks, and livestock troughs.
Project Final Status: Completed & Handed Over (100% Target Met)
Moving far beyond utilizing water solely for basic domestic consumption, local smallholders and pastoralists in Sanaag’s Durdur zone took a smarter approach. They maximized permanent solar-powered water flow rates to establish thriving, micro-scale climate-smart agro-pastoral zones. By intelligently channeling discharge overflow into structured farming plots, the local community successfully unlocked the true potential of their land.
- Sustainable Agriculture: Successful cultivation of organic vegetables and dense, perennial grass varieties.
- Immediate Economic Windfalls: Generated rapid financial returns for local smallholders through direct sales in local markets.
- Livestock Protection: Provided a vital emergency cache of green animal fodder, insulating primary livestock assets—the backbone of the local economy—against severe environmental shocks and droughts.
The Durdur climate adaptation story provides an empirical, proven model for sustainable development. This successful partnership between HADAF and Al-Nasr Relief Agency (UK) can be replicated across larger arid Somali landscapes to fight drought, secure food supplies, and build lasting community resilience.
Immediate Emergency Interventions: We respond swiftly to save lives and alleviate human suffering. This includes distributing emergency food baskets to families severely affected by climate-induced droughts or displaced by conflict and wars, as well as deploying clean drinking water trucks to the hardest-hit communities.- Long-Term Sustainability: Our efforts do not stop at temporary aid; we transition into sustainable solutions. By implementing vital Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs and utilizing solar-powered water systems, we transform arid zones into climate-smart agro-pastoral hubs—securing local food supplies and protecting essential livestock assets.
Effective development requires precise scientific planning. We organize regular intellectual forums and academic seminars that bring together experts, researchers, and policymakers. These platforms analyze local environmental and economic challenges, providing evidence-based data to guide our field projects toward maximum efficiency.
The local community is our primary partner in progress. Through structured panel discussions and open dialogues, we actively engage community members, elders, and youth. This ensures we listen to their needs directly, share vital knowledge on climate adaptation, and empower them to lead their own development journey.
